Who We Are
Empowering citizens. Honoring the flag. Rebuilding civic pride — one front porch at a time.
The HRW Foundation is a nonprofit civic program dedicated to restoring American patriotism and unity through respectful, local action. Named in honor of Hopkinson, Ross, and Wisher, our mission centers around the American flag as a living symbol of freedom, sacrifice, and shared values.
We connect with underserved communities, replace worn flags, engage in meaningful civic conversations, and inspire a renewed sense of belonging — all through our flagship initiative: The Flag Exchange Program.
Why “HRW” Matters
Our name honors three historical figures who shaped the American flag:
- Francis Hopkinson – Signer, Designer, Patriot
- Betsy Ross – Maker, Mother, Revolutionary
- Grace Wisher – Apprentice, African American Patriot
From urban neighborhoods to rural towns, we meet people where they are — not to persuade, but to connect. Every flag we deliver, every conversation we hold, and every porch we visit is part of a movement to wake the nation.
The Flag Exchange Program
“When we exchange a flag, we open a door to something deeper.”
The HRW Flag Exchange Program is a community-centered initiative where worn or tattered American flags are replaced with new ones — free of charge — through a respectful, veteran-led interaction on the front porch.
Identify a home flying a worn or tattered flag
Volunteers respectfully identify homes flying worn or damaged flags, especially in communities with low civic engagement.
Deliver a new flag, free of charge
- A new American flag is gifted, often with mounting hardware, accompanied by a Flag Education & Civic Packet including:
- A U.S. Flag Code summary
- A brief history of Hopkinson, Ross & Wisher
- A civic checklist: register to vote, contact officials, attend meetings
Retire the old flag honorably
Worn flags are collected and retired with dignity in partnership with veterans' groups, VFWs, and civic clubs.
Engage in a respectful civic conversation
Each exchange sparks a nonpartisan, neighborly dialogue about the flag’s meaning, the role of citizenship, and local civic opportunities.
Veterans lead our outreach — walking neighborhoods, sharing their stories, and serving as living bridges between the symbol of the flag and the spirit of community.
“I didn’t just serve overseas. Now I serve on the sidewalk.”
— Mike R., US Army Veteran & Door Team Leader
❝ I hadn’t flown a flag in years. When they knocked on my door with a new one and offered to retire the old, I felt honored. It reminded me of what I served for. ❞
❝ This program gave me a new mission. I may not wear the uniform anymore, but I still serve — this time, by handing someone a flag and reminding them they matter. ❞
❝ HRW Foundation brought something powerful to our town — not just flags, but real conversations and unity. It was a quiet revolution on every porch. ❞
❝ I used the civic packet they gave us to teach my 6th graders about the Constitution. The kids connected with it more than any textbook. ❞
